Carte was born in 2016 out of joy, not so much out of actual need. The joints of the oak frame use the “Cartesian joint” familiar from Gerrit Rietveld’s 1918 Red-Blue chair, also known as the Rietveld joint. It was one of the big driving forces in this process. It was also an extremely essential factor to make Carte move smoothly so that it wouldn’t just crouch next to the wall. As I watch the approaching Carte, the smoothly sliding rubber-coated wheel makes its movement silent and stable on many different surfaces. This time, all that is offered is coffee and a bun, but even that is more festive this way.
